PROJECT TITLE :

A Novel Approach to Moving Target Screening for UHF-Band SAR GMTI

ABSTRACT:

Moving targets are severely smeared in the UHF-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery due to the long coherent processing interval. In addition, this results in a low ratio of signal to clutter and noise that could lead to an unacceptable false alarm rate in the indication of multichannel ground moving targets.

This letter outlines a method for screening moving targets to see if they are in fact moving targets rather than false alarms. The Doppler phase history of any isolated target within a clutter-suppressed omega-K SAR image can be recovered using an inverse omega-K algorithm.

A simple range-Doppler algorithm is used to create a subimage from the recovered data. Azimuth autofocus processing then refocuses the subimage. If the subimage only contains stationary targets, refocusing will have no effect on its sharpness; otherwise, it will see a significant improvement in sharpness.

Because of this, we can tell if a moving target is real or not. The method's effectiveness is demonstrated using both simulated and real SAR data collected in the UHF band.
